In October 2008 the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) changed the routes
and landing patterns for all flights coming from
the northeastern United States so that they
would for the first time come south of the
Southwest Florida International Airport over
Estero to land from the west into the prevailing
winds.

The graphic above shows the present route for
all flights from the northeast including the
approach to the airport while the graphic
on the right shows the “Estero Plan” route that
would amend the present approach pattern by
diverting the planes north of the Fort Myers
metro area into the airport.
The new route established by the FAA in 2008 is
in red.
The route depicted in the following graphic will be implemented by the FAA in the near future as part of the change
for the radar controlled approach system that has been used for decades
to a new Global Information System (GIS) approach system. (Click for
