After Bonita Springs experienced significant flooding along the Imperial
River in 1995 the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)commissioned
the "South Lee County Watershed Study". In 2007 when the SFWMD attempted
to force the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to install 5 large
culverts under I-75 as it is widened to six lanes the Estero community including
the Brooks Concerned Citizens (BCC) and The Conservancy of Southwest Florida
urged the SFWMD and Lee County to update the South Lee County Watershed Study.
SFWMD and Lee County agreed to jointly fund this update and allocated $250,000
for this project. During 2008 the Imperial River flooded once again adding
greater urgency to the issue. The Update was approved in the late spring of 2008
and SFWMD set a May 14, 2009 deadline for completion.
