The Greater Estero Cultural Arts Council (ArtsEstero) graduated from the Estero
Council of Community Leaders and has expanded its focus most recently on helping
arts in educations after taking informal surveys of the community.
“It was a huge task. That was our big challenge,” said Vice President of
ArtsEstero Joan Doyle.
The most recent board of directors for ArtsEstero includes educators from Estero
public schools and Florida Gulf Coast University, including Mark Gurnow, of
Estero High School, and Alex Wilkinson at Pinewoods Elementary School.
Mary Pautz, a member of ArtsEstero, runs a grief, scripture and education
foundation in memory of her husband, Richard Pautz, who lost a battle to
leukemia 13 years ago. The foundation, Richard R. Pautz Lifelong Learning
Foundation, has raised money to bring in professional musicians for benefit
concerts, including an upcoming concert by guitarist Dick Eliot at Pinewoods
Elementary School and two performances at Lighthouse Bay in The Brooks.
“I wanted to do something in his honor,” Pautz said.
According to the artist, her husband was always supportive of her art endeavors.
“I spent my life in the arts, and he spent his supporting me in the arts,” Pautz
explained.
Guitarist Dick Eliot played in Las Vegas for 30 years where he participated in
world tours with Sammy Davis Jr., Andy Williams and more. Eliot’s recording
credits include gold records with Patti Page, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, and
Harry James Big Band with Buddy Rich. Eliot will play and sing tunes from
several of his CDs: “Night and Day,” “Romantic Italian Melodies,” “Tenderly,”
and “Hushabye.”
“He’s played with everybody that there is,” Pautz said. “He puts on a good
show.”
Pinewoods Elementary also will receive a $240 grant for an upcoming art club
project called “Trash From the Past,” where students will take part in eco art
activities using recycled materials to create a school mural by April 2008.
Across the way, at San Carlos Park Elementary, a grant of $900 will be presented
for first-, second- and third-grade students participating in drama. The grant
presentations will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the ArtsEstero public
meeting at 4 p.m. at the Estero Community Park and Recreation Center on
Corkscrew Road.
